#122 – Country Boy Brewing in Lexington, KY

(1) OUR EXPERIENCE

Our stay in Lexington, KY led us over to Country Boy Brewing on a Sunday afternoon. This brewery has a rugged feel both inside and out on their back patio and completes the mood with country music playing in the background. There are 24 tap handles at the bar: 11 of which were in-house Country Boy brews that ran the spectrum from a blonde to a gose to a barrel-aged stout during our visit, while the other 13 were guest tap handles from various breweries in the area as well as across the country. These guys have made themselves stand out by barrel aging beers right from the start, doing collaborations with multiple other breweries, and even growing their own peppers to add to their beers. The bartender, Zac, will help direct you in the right direction for your tastes and mood, so don’t miss out on a trip to their taproom!

Other things we learned:

* Have four 60bbl fermenters and some 30 bbl as well
* During their 2 year anniversary earlier this year, they had over 30 of their beers on tap in the tap room, including some experimental sours
* Talking about growing their own hops; have used fresh hops already from Revolutionary Hop Farm
* Hold a beer cheese competition to help out Habitat for Humanity
* Have food trucks outside 7 days a week

What we learned about their beer during our visit:

* Nacho Bait is their blonde with habanero peppers added
* Jalapeno smoked porter is one of their seasonals and a cult favorite; grow the peppers themselves and de-seed them manually
* Try to keep at least 10 – 12 of their beers on tap at all times in the tap room
* Cougar Bait Blonde, Shotgun Wedding Dark Brown Ale, and Cliff Jumper IPA are usually on at all times; everything else comes and goes
* Have aged their Papaw’s Red in Pappy Van Winkle 20 year barrels
* Have been barrel aging beers since they opened
* Did a collaboration last year with West Sixth called Country Western which was a hoppy pale ale
* Country Western Volume 2 came out last month; it is a brown ale made with Kentucky sorghum, aged in bourbon barrels, and was the “Official Beer of Lexington Craft Beer Week.”
* Did a collaboration with Against the Grain – Saladbarity Baltic Porter
* Did a collaboration with Witch’s Hat – Saison du Clifton (Video)
